Welcome to HappyGoatBarn.com — a place created for goat lovers, backyard farmers, homesteaders, and anyone passionate about raising healthy and happy goats naturally.
My name is Bijaya Kumar, and I’m the founder of HappyGoatBarn. I’m a backyard goat farmer, homesteading enthusiast, and registered pharmacist with years of hands-on experience in livestock care and natural farm management.
This blog was built to share real-life goat farming experiences, practical backyard farming knowledge, and lessons learned from years of raising goats in a natural and sustainable way. Whether you’re raising your very first goat or managing a growing herd, my goal is to help make goat farming easier, healthier, and more enjoyable.
Our Goat Farming Journey
Our family’s journey with goats began back in 2009 when we started raising a few goats at home as both a hobby and a small farming activity. What began as simple backyard livestock keeping slowly turned into a deep passion for goat farming and homesteading.
Between 2009 and 2014, we gained valuable experience caring for goats, learning about feeding systems, breeding, shelter management, disease prevention, and natural livestock care through everyday hands-on work.
Like every small farmer, we faced challenges along the way. There were mistakes, learning experiences, unexpected health issues, and countless lessons that taught us how important patience, observation, and proper animal care truly are.
After taking a break from goat farming for several years, we restarted our journey again in 2020 with more knowledge, better planning, and a stronger commitment to natural farming methods.
Today, our farm is home to approximately 50–70 goats, including healthy breeding bucks (male goats), productive does (female goats), and energetic young kids raised in a peaceful free-range backyard environment surrounded by nature.
Our Farming Philosophy
At HappyGoatBarn, we believe goats thrive best in low-stress, natural, and clean environments.
Our goats are raised in a free-range fenced backyard system where they can move freely, graze naturally, and express normal behaviors. We focus heavily on natural feeding systems, practical low-cost management methods, and sustainable homestead-style farming practices that work well for both beginners and experienced goat keepers.
Our farm covers approximately 4,840 square yards, providing plenty of outdoor space for movement, browsing, exercise, and healthy herd behavior.
We use a combination of natural feeding methods, including:
- Fresh green leaves
- Natural forage
- Hydroponic maize fodder systems
- Dried mung bean plants
- Peanut plants
- Arhar plants
- Urad plants
- Seasonal vegetation and fresh farm-grown fodder
Over the years, we’ve learned that proper nutrition, clean housing, reduced stress, and consistent care are some of the biggest factors in raising healthy goats successfully.
Goat Breeds We Raise and Work With
We have experience raising and caring for several goat breeds commonly used for backyard farming, meat production, and homesteading.
Some of the breeds we work with include:
- Boer goats
- Sirohi goats
- Black Bengal goats
- Crossbred meat goats
- Backyard homestead goats
Each breed has unique characteristics, growth patterns, feeding habits, and management needs. One of the things we enjoy most is understanding how different breeds adapt to practical backyard farming systems and natural feeding methods.
Through this blog, we aim to help readers better understand breed selection, breeding management, feeding practices, housing systems, and overall goat care.
My Background as a Pharmacist
One thing that makes our approach unique is my professional healthcare background.
As a registered pharmacist, I naturally developed a strong understanding of preventive care, hygiene, nutrition, medications, and health management — skills that also became extremely valuable in livestock care and goat farming.
My pharmacy education helps me better understand:
- Preventive goat care
- Nutritional balance
- Supplement use
- Medication awareness
- Basic disease management
- Clean farm practices
- Health monitoring techniques
While I am not a veterinarian, my healthcare background allows me to approach goat care with a practical, research-based, and prevention-focused mindset.
At the same time, I strongly believe that natural management, proper nutrition, clean living conditions, sunlight, exercise, and stress reduction are the foundation of raising healthier animals.
A Family-Powered Farm
HappyGoatBarn is not a one-person journey.
Our farm is supported by my family, especially my father, mother, and myself. Together, we help manage daily feeding, cleaning, goat care, health monitoring, housing maintenance, and overall farm management.
For us, goat farming is more than just raising livestock — it’s a lifestyle built around responsibility, patience, hard work, and respect for animals.
One of the most rewarding parts of goat farming is simply watching the herd move freely across the yard, browse naturally, interact socially, and grow stronger through proper care and attention.
Why I Started HappyGoatBarn
After restarting our goat farming journey in 2020, I realized how difficult it can be for beginners to find practical and trustworthy information online.
Many new goat owners struggle with questions like:
- What should goats eat?
- Which goat breed is best for beginners?
- How do you prevent common goat diseases?
- What type of shelter do goats need?
- How do you raise healthy kids?
- How do you manage goats naturally in a backyard setup?
I started HappyGoatBarn to share honest experiences, practical lessons, and educational content that can genuinely help goat raisers avoid common mistakes and feel more confident.
This blog is built from real-life experience — not just theory.
